Under the auspices of the Minister of Urban Development, Housing and Transportation of the State of Brandenburg (now the Ministry of Infrastructure and Agriculture) have 1992 the cities with the most beautiful city centers to the working group "cities with historic centers" in the state of Brandenburg joined forces.

The cities are all with the aim set out to save their historic centers from decay, to preserve the historic structure, fill with new life and still meet the high demands of the urban heritage conservation.

The AG consists of 31 member cities in the state of Brandenburg. The city Lübbenau/Spreewald is since the 1. January 2007 one of it.
